Seated at the table from left to right: Vern Unsworth, Rob Harper, Thanet Natisri, Woranan “Tik” Ratrawiphakkun, and Colonel Singhanat

But Colonel Singhanat decides he has to take the chance. In the SEALs’ camp, Thanet and Singhanat find SEAL commander Rear Admiral Apakorn. They bring along an American caver named Josh Morris, who lives in Thailand and speaks fluent Thai. Josh has been volunteering as a translator for the British team. Colonel Singhanat approaches Admiral Apakorn with great humility and politeness and requests just a few moments to speak with him. The commander agrees to a brief conversation.

“Brother, thank you for hearing us out,” says Colonel Singhanat. “We would like to provide you with some information we have learned from the British divers and the international team.”

Singhanat, Thanet, and Josh quickly update Admiral Apakorn with every bit of information they have. As the rear admiral listens, his face becomes more and more serious. When the men are finished making their case, Apakorn confides that his SEALs have been working to the point of exhaustion, and he worries about how much longer they can keep up their backbreaking efforts. He agrees to use his authority to support a dive rescue.

He says that in the evening all the high-level Thai officials will gather in the War Room in base camp to discuss the path forward. Thailand’s minister of the interior, Anupong Paochinda, will be there. The minister of the interior oversees all the governors of every province in Thailand and reports directly to the prime minister himself. If they can convince Minister Paochinda, then they should be able to get permission to go forward with the dive rescue. But they must have a solid plan to present. Every detail must be thought out, because if there are any cracks in the plan, the Thai leadership will think it’s too risky and will back out.

Thanet, Colonel Singhanat, and Josh thank Admiral Apakorn and then hurry across base camp to where the US Air Force squadron is stationed. Thanet has already met Major Charles Hodges and his divemaster, Sergeant Derek Anderson, and he admires how they conduct themselves. They are professional and straightforward but also very respectful and even-tempered. If anyone can make a solid case for diving the children out, it’s them. But will they be able to design an airtight plan in time for the meeting?
